There is loads to do in the Basque region around Apitoki. Outdoor pursuits like walking, surfing, golf and cycling. And visiting the local towns for sightseeing, like Urrugne, St Jean De Luz and San Sebastián. Here are some of our favourites.
Walking
With over 500km of trails, the Basque Country is a fantastic place to explore. Whether you want countryside, mountain, coastal or forest trails they are all here. The Basque Country is unspoilt and you will get a sense of freedom when you venture around the area.
We can assist with the preparation of suitable routes that you can take yourself starting from the house or further afield.
Surfing
The Basque country was where surfing was introduced to Europe. In the 1950s, a group of American surfers started surfing at La Côte des Basques beach in Biarritz – the South West coast of France is now the European capital of surfing.
Surf schools, board hire & surf shops
There are plenty surf schools and board hire can either be arranged at the many surf shops or in the summer months directly on the beaches. Here are a few links to either book surf lessons or hire equipment:

Golf
There is plenty of choice for the golf fanatic, Biarritz is twinned with Augusta, venue of the Masters and home of the “Golden Square” of Basque golf, formed by the four vintage courses of Biarritz Le Phare (1888), La Nivelle (1907), Chiberta (1927) and Chantaco (1928). Further south on the Spanish side of the Basque Country, the Royal San Sebastian (1910) is the home club of the two times Masters green jacket Jose Maria Olazabal.

Cycling
Again this is another great activity you can do straight from the house. Head off in any direction and you will be in spectacular surroundings… that’s as long as you like a few climbs!
Places of interest
There are so many places to visit from pretty Basque villages like Sare, Ainhoa, to resorts all along the coast – Biarritz, Guéthary, Anglet, to towns – Bayonne, Hondarribia, and Irun in Spain. Here are just few of the places which are easily accessible from Apitoki: Urrugne, St Jean De Luz, San Sebastián, Bayonne, Hondarribia, and Irun in Spain. St Jean De Luz
St Jean De Luz is a beautiful seaside resort and fishing port. There are wonderful hidden corners, winding lanes that take you to whitewashed houses and tiny shops and some beautiful architecture, notably the Maison Louis XI and the Maison de l’Infante. See www.saint-jean-de-luz.com

San Sebastián is the true gem of Basque resorts. With its blend of cosmopolitan chic and delightful old-world feel.
